In this post I will show you how to update your blackberry using app loader. App loader updates your Blackberry just like Blackberry Desktop manager, however it gives you more choice in the apps and fonts that are downloaded onto your blackberry when you update. App loader also allows you to download Leaked OS updates. (OS updates are still released by RIM, the only difference is they have not been tested or released by Carriers). You can also download unofficial OS updates meaning they have been released by other Carriers and your carrier is either testing this os or just prefers not to release it.
How to update:
Step 1. Download the OS to your computer (This is not compatible with Mac) and install it by double clicking on the file and following the instructions. I will have a page with the latest OS updates for the newer Blackberry devices.
EDIT: Here is the page with the links to the most recent Blackberry OS updates
Step 2. Once you have installed the OS go to desktop manager and backup your device as a precaution.
Step 3. Press start on your computer and type the following into the search bar or just go to,
c:/program files/common files/research in motion/app loader
on 64 bit computers you need to go to c:/program files(86)/common files/research in motion/app loader
Once you are in app loader scroll down and delete a file called Vendor.xml.
Step 4. Make sure your device is plugged in(does not need to be turned off) and open the app loader application wizard near the top.
Step 5. Type in your device password if you have one when prompted and and then when you arrive to the next screen tick the applications you would like to have installed on your device and then choose back up and restore on the next screen, then press update.
Step 6. Let your device update, at one point your device will reboot and get stuck when it is two thirds into rebooting. This is normal do not disconnect the cable.
Step 7. If App loader has not restored your device then do it manually through Desktop Manager.
And that is how you update a blackberry using App Loader

How to lock the screen on a blackberry torch so that it does not rotate.
If you are like me and use the blackberry while lying down or lying on your back and then you turn and of course the screen turns, well recently I brought a new app called quick launcher which allows me to stop the screen from rotating although it is annoying as you have to change the option every time you go into a new app. Once you've downloaded quick launcher go into the option and enable "tilt lock to system menu" and then whenever you need to stop your screen from rotating then just press the bb menu and press QL lock tilt. Here is the link Download Quick Launcher from app world
How to get playbook gestures on the blackberry torch
I recently got a blackberry playbook and have found myself using them on my torch however recently I found that you actually can do this! Using a theme called Tabphone you can use the same gestures as you use on your blackberry playbook on your torch including slide up for app menu and from top left for the status bar. This theme also works in landscape. Here is the full description of the theme:
"It’s time to revolutionize your smartphone into Tabphone
Tabphone is totally controlled over your gestures. Follow your tablet rules on your BlackBerry phone. It revolutionizes your smartphone to a Tabphone. Get the most of tablet feel with new OS 6.1 icons & gesture controls as seen on playbook. With settings panel & 7 custom app list on homescreen, you dont need to dig application menu every moment. Also features widget replacement for your favorite Twitter client. See images for short tutorial.
*** No Trackpad Navigation ***
*** Demo ***
All app buttons are deactivated except ‘Universal Search’ & ‘BlackBerry Messenger’".
Here's the link if you want to buy or demo Tabphone
